AI Changes Raanjhanaa Ending, Rai & Dhanush Call It Out Legal Action

Filmmaker Aanand L Rai has spoken out strongly against the re-release of his 2013 film Raanjhanaa, which was altered using AI to include a different ending. He confirmed that both he and actor Dhanush are seriously considering legal action.

The modified version, released on August 1 by rights holder Eros International, featured an AI-generated happy ending in the Tamil version, Ambikapathy. This major change was made without the original team’s permission.

In a statement, Rai called the move ‘a very dangerous precedent’ and expressed deep concern about the future of creative rights. “I am very worried about my other films. So is Dhanush. We are actively looking at judicial remedies to restore and preserve our creative content,” he said.

Anand L Rai emphasised that while long-term legal steps are being planned, their immediate focus is on stopping this unauthorised version.

He had earlier taken to Instagram to share his disappointment, writing, “The past three weeks have been surreal and deeply upsetting… Raanjhanaa was altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent. It’s devastating.”

He also posted on X, stating, “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul.”

The controversy highlights growing concerns in the film industry about the use of artificial intelligence to change original work. Rai and Dhanush now seem determined to fight back legally, not just for their film, but to set an example for how creative content should be protected in the age of AI.

Their strong stance aims to raise awareness and prevent similar issues from happening to other filmmakers in the future.
