Prabhu Deva’s actioner Rowdy Rathore — starring Akshay Kumar in dual roles alongside Sonakshi Sinha, was one of the highest-grossing films of 2012. Given he film’s positive response, the film — a remake of 2006 Telugu film Vikramarkudu, was all set to get a sequel with producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali investing nearly three years into it. However, a new report now reveals that the said sequel has been scrapped and the script is being repurposed into something new. Scroll on to know the details.
Rowdy Rathore 2 Scrapped, Script To Be Reused
As per a recent Bollywood Hungama report, Rowdy Rathore 2’s producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, have decided to put the film on the backburned. The reason for duo deciding to drop the sequel – despite working on it for nearly three years, is reportedly due to Disney India – who co-holds intellectual property rights of the original film after its acquisition of Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV Motion Pictures, hesitating to commit to the sequel.
The publication quoted a source saying, “With Disney unwilling to commit, Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have decided to scrap the idea of Rowdy Rathore 2 altogether and repurpose the script into a standalone commercial entertainer, free from the Rowdy Rathore tag.”
About The Repurposed Script
As per the report, the script — penned by veteran screenplay writer V Vijayendra Prasad, is currently undergoing significant revisions to make it a fresh, high-octane cop drama. The script is said to have the mass-entertainment appeal of the 2012 action blockbuster that the audience loved. Renowned Tamil filmmaker PS Mithran has reportedly been signed on to direct the film. The film is likely to begin production early next year.
The casting for the repurposed script hasn’t been finalized yet. However, sources reveal that Sidharth Malhotra — who was initially in the run to lead in the action entertainer, may no longer be involved associated with the project. The makers are reportedly actively seeking a younger, bankable star to play the hard-hitting, larger-than-life police officer in the standalone actioner.
