Anurag Kashyap apologises for remark on Brahmin community
The filmmaker took to X and wrote in Hindi, translated as: “In my anger, I forgot my decorum while responding to someone and ended up speaking ill of the entire Brahmin community. That community, whose many members have been part of my life, are still there, and contribute greatly. Today, they are all hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and the way I spoke. By saying such things, I myself derailed my own point from the issue. I sincerely apologise to this community, to whom I did not intend to say this, but in the heat of the moment, I wrote it while responding to someone’s vile comment.”
He continued, “I apologise to all my supportive friends, my family, and that community for my way of speaking and for using inappropriate language. Going forward, I will work to ensure this does not happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I need to address an issue, I will use the right words. I hope you will forgive me (sic).”
What is the controversy?
Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa starrer Phule had courted major controversy. A section of the Brahmin community raised objections over the portrayal of its members in the film and Kashyap had objected the judgements. One social media user commented, “Brahmins are your fathers. The more you mess with them, the more they will burn you.” The filmmaker shot back, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins)”. After this, several police complaints were filed against him and even threats were sent to his family.
