Arjun Rampal and Manav Kaul starrer ‘Nail Polish’ premiered on Zee5 on January 1. It is a courtroom drama that also stars Anand Tiwari and Rajit Kapur in pivotal roles. Directed by Bugs Bhargava Krishna, ‘Nail Polish’ is inspired by real-life events. The movie has been garnering lots of praise from audiences as well as critics.

We recently had a conversation with Arjun Rampal who has played the role of a lawyer, Sid Jaisingh. Arjun said that earlier he was paranoid to do the film but later when he read the script, he couldn’t say no to it. Arjun said, “When I picked up the script, I couldn’t put it down. It was the artiste in me that got greedy. When I discovered why it was named ‘Nail Polish’ through reading the script, I had a big smile on my face. It is one of the nicest scripts I have got to read.”

Arjun had 6 – 7 readings before he shot. “For me, it is very important that a character is well written and well defined. But a character is only a character. I can’t see him externally. I have to internalise him as an actor. For me, the only way you can do that is by creating flaws on the character, by creating insecurities and also have a balance of his positivity, his strength, his heroic deeds, his thought process and not messing with the law and being technically very sound and have confidence. All those aspects once you have, you can humanise a character. For me, it was very important to humanise Sid Jaisingh. He is a great character and very well written but for me what was important was how does this case change him, what effect does this case have on him on a personal level. We discussed that and we went on to readings. It was so incredible because I think we got this time where everybody was at home and was dying to work and meet people. I had an opportunity to do that. So, this lovely cast of mine and my lovely director, all of them are pure good artistes. We were holding each other’s hands. We had 6-7 readings and we had 6-7 different versions coming out with each reading,” he said.

He further said, “This film has taught me that every film should be given that much time and you can have that much time to absorb it.”

When asked how would he like to paraphrase ‘Nail Polish’, Arjun said, “There are different shades to law and my client is innocent”(he laughs).
