A documentary about Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was released by the BBC World Service on June 11. Despite Moosewala’s father filing a police complaint to prevent the screening, the documentary premiered on YouTube. This two-part series focuses on the circumstances surrounding the death of the popular Punjabi artist Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu AKA Sidhu Moosewala.

BBC Releases Sidhu Moosewala’s Documentary On YouTube

The timing of the release coincided with Moosewala’s birth anniversary. Even after his father submitted a petition to the Mansa court in Punjab seeking a stay on its screening. The court is scheduled to hear the case on June 12. Despite objections from Moose Wala’s family, the BBC proceeded with the release of the documentary. It aired before his family could put out their tribute—an extended play (EP) featuring some of his unreleased songs.

The film includes interviews with Moose Wala’s old friends, journalists, and senior police officials from Punjab and Delhi. It also features an audio interview with gangster Goldy Brar. He was accused of orchestrating Moose Wala’s murder on May 29, 2022, in Jawahar Ke village, Mansa district.

Initially, the BBC had planned to show the documentary in a Mumbai cinema hall on Wednesday evening. However, amid the controversy, they chose to release it online on YouTube instead. The first episode, titled The Killing Call. It examines Moose Wala’s early life, his rise to fame, and the controversies surrounding him. The second episode covers the events leading up to and following his murder.

Sidhu Moosewala’s Father Called For A Ban On Son’s Documentary

In an interview with India Today, Moose Wala’s father confirmed, “We objected over the documentary and the release is without our consent. We have taken the matter to the Mansa court, but will soon move the High Court on this.”

Earlier, in a complaint filed with the Maharashtra DGP and Mumbai’s Juhu Police Station, Balkaur Singh Sidhu stated that BBC World Service was organising a program on June 11 at 3 pm to screen the documentary on Sidhu Moose Wala in Juhu. The BBC reportedly sent invitations to invitees, claiming that the documentary contained facts about the Punjabi singer that had not been revealed or published elsewhere. Moose Wala’s father had earlier alleged that the documentary might be an attempt to tarnish his son’s legacy.
