The Delhi High Court has reserved its decision on Jacqueline Fernandez’s petition challenging the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The case involves her alleged connection with jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who reportedly gave her expensive gifts worth crores of rupees.
Jacqueline Fernandez’s Petition In Money Laundering Case
On Thursday, Justice Anish Dayal heard arguments from both sides. Jacqueline was represented by Senior Advocate Sidharth Aggarwal, while Special Counsel Zoheb Hossain appeared for the ED.
Jacqueline’s lawyer argued that if the ED claimed money was given to 15 people, then everyone should be investigated equally. He questioned if simply receiving money from someone accused of a crime should automatically be considered money laundering.
Aggarwal pointed out that Sukesh met Jacqueline pretending to be a businessman. He said just because someone is a celebrity doesn’t mean they are aware of another person’s criminal past. “Today, I am paying the price of being a celebrity,” he added.
Jacqueline has requested the court to cancel the charges against her in the Rs 200 crore case. She said she is a victim and was unaware of Sukesh’s illegal activities. Her plea claims she did not help him launder money in any way.
The ED, however, argued that Jacqueline continued to accept gifts even after knowing about Sukesh’s background. They said their investigation under the PMLA is different from regular police investigations and can have different accused.
Aggarwal clarified that Jacqueline isn’t asking for the entire case to be quashed—only her name. He also highlighted that the investigation is still ongoing, and a trial hasn’t started yet. The court has now reserved its decision, which will be announced at a later date.
