Dia Mirza In Kaafir

Actress Dia Mirza’s web show Kaafir, which was released in 2019, is set to re-release as a film. The actress portrayed an innocent Pakistani woman who unintentionally crosses the Indian border and is subsequently imprisoned like a militant in the project.

Dia Mirza Says, She Vomited After Finishing The Shoot

Dia Mirza talked candidly about the rape scenario in Kaafi, she also acknowledged that the scene was extremely draining and recalls puking after it was filmed. Speaking to News 18, she said, “I remember when we shot the rape scene, it was so hard. I was shaking physically after we got done with filming that scene. I remember throwing up. I vomited after we finished rolling that entire sequence. That’s how emotionally and physically demanding those situations were. When you take your entire body into the truth of that moment, you feel it. You feel it in its full extent.”

She further added, “There were many, many, moments in it which were really hard. We were filming in like the most poetically beautiful environment. We were shooting in Himachal in the most beautiful locations, and we actually shot 360 pages over 45 days. So we’re clocking something between 15 to 18 minutes of springtime a day. It is a lot. So work days were long, they were gruelling, but my God, they were just so rewarding because it’s not often that a part like this comes to you. It’s one a lifetime opportunity. These stories don’t really get told. So it was just a win, win, win, win at every level.”

Kaafir follows the emotionally layered narrative of a woman from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir who finds herself imprisoned in India. The story, steeped in human conflict and identity, fits right into Dia’s evolving cinematic palette. She further added, “I think the first and most important thing one needs to feel as an artist is empathy towards the character that you’re playing and embodying. So that when you play, you’re absolutely true to the story and to everything within it. Playing Kainaaz actually made me a mother much before I became a biological mother. It was because of the kind of intensity and ferocity and love and protectiveness I felt for her while working on the show.”
