Ranveer Singh Faces Legal Action Over Mimicking Rishab Shetty's Kantara Chapter 1’s Daivi Controversy

A few months ago, actor Ranveer Singh faced criticism for mimicking the Daiva scene from Rishab Shetty’s film Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 during a public event. On Wednesday, an FIR was registered against Ranveer at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru, accusing him of insulting Hindu religious sentiments and the Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka.

FIR Registered Against Ranveer Singh Over Mimicking Kantara Chapter 1’s Daivi Row

Ranveer has been charged under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to NDTV. The complaint was filed by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Methal. The FIR alleges that the incident occurred at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025. The complainant claims that Ranveer made derogatory remarks and staged a mocking act that demeaned revered elements of the Daiva tradition.

In his complaint, advocate Methal stated that Ranveer imitated expressions associated with Panjurli and Guliga Daiva, describing them in a crude, comical, and disrespectful manner. He also alleged that Ranveer referred to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost.”

Chavundi Daiva is a revered guardian deity representing divine feminine energy in coastal Karnataka. Labeling the deity as a ghost, the complaint argues, constitutes a serious misrepresentation that hurt religious sentiments.

The case has been referred to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru, with a hearing scheduled for April 8. The complaint was initially filed on December 27 last year. The court directed the High Grounds police to register an FIR under Section 175 clause 3 of BNS.

Ranveer’s Daiva Scene Controversy

Following widespread backlash, Ranveer issued a public apology on social media. He stated, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I understand how much effort it takes to perform that scene. And I have the utmost admiration for him. I have always respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize.”

The incident took place during the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025, which Rishab Shetty also attended. Ranveer took the stage and imitated Rishab’s Daiva act from Kantara. In a video from the event, Ranveer said, “I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi Daiva) enters your body — that shot was amazing.” Despite Rishab’s previous request for him not to imitate the scene, Ranveer went ahead with the act. Many people viewed this as insensitive and disrespectful.
