Geeta Basra made her debut in films alongside Emraan Hashmi, but it was cricketer Harbhajan Singh who quickly became the biggest twist in her life. Geeta was only 21 when she entered Bollywood with Aditya Datt’s 2006 film Dil Diya Hai. She later reunited with Emraan Hashmi in The Train the following year. Around that same time, she crossed paths with Harbhajan Singh, who had already made up his mind about marrying her.
Geeta Basra Recalls Harbhajan Singh Asking Yuvraj Singh For Her Number
“He was very clear. He saw my poster, and it was probably love at first sight for him. He asked Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) for my number. Obviously, Yuvi has a lot of friends,” Geeta shared in a chat with BHARTI TV. Harbhajan reached out soon after, though Geeta didn’t reply immediately. “They’d just won the World Cup. So a couple of days later, I’d messaged, ‘Well done! Congratulations!’ That’s it. We got in touch again. When we met, he was very clear he didn’t want friendship and said, ‘Tere se hi shaadi karunga’. I was taken aback and said, ‘Shaadi?’ I was only 21.”
Geeta Reveals Losing 4 Films Because Of Her Link Up With Harbhajan
The actress admitted that she was still trying to build her career and was worried that being linked with a cricketer could harm her chances. “Fifteen years ago, it was a very different time for women. Even if you were spotted with someone, your career was over. I lost out on four films because of the news that I was getting married,” she revealed.
Despite her initial hesitation, Geeta finally said yes after ten months. “I told him the day you’d score 300 wickets, I’d say yes. A couple of days later, he got 300 wickets. So I said let’s give it a shot. Because all my friends told me he’s a very good guy. He’s a star, but doesn’t have the attitude of a star. He’s humble. He’s also a Punjabi like me. That matters a lot.”
About Geeta-Harbhajan
Geeta and Harbhajan tied the knot in 2015. She shared that the decision wasn’t easy, citing doubts about cultural differences and loyalty. But Harbhajan proved her wrong. “Sometimes, we just need to know, can I spend the rest of my life with this partner? Because we’re from different countries so there’s a cultural difference. Then he’s so known, so I was wondering if he’s loyal. But he’s beyond that. He’s a very grounded person.”
The couple is now parents to daughter Hinaya Heer Plaha, born in 2016, and son Jovan Veer Singh Plaha, born in 2021. Geeta has largely stayed away from films since 2016, while Harbhajan announced his retirement from cricket. She will be seen in Raj Kundra’s Punjabi film Mehar.
