Dharmendra was one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors, ruling the industry for over six decades and earning the admiration of millions. His outstanding performance in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani left fans captivated, eager to see more of his talent. On November 24, the legendary Bollywood star, known as Bollywood’s He-Man, passed away, prompting mourning across the film fraternity, fans, friends, family, and sports communities. His death marked the end of an era, with many calling it a significant loss. Last Sunday, Dharmendra was honoured in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the 79th BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards) in London, evoking deep emotions among his admirers.
Hema Malini Emotionally Recalls Late Dharmendra
Expressing her feelings about the tribute, Hema Malini, Dharmendra’s wife and a renowned actress, spoke to Hindustan Times. She described the recognition as a beautiful moment that he truly deserved. She said, “It’s a huge honour not just for us but for the entire country. No Indian artist received this honour this year. Dharmendra had fans not only across India but around the world. He was inspiring both as an actor and as a human being. There will never be another like him, so we are all proud and excited about the BAFTA mention.”
She emotionalised, “It’s hard to accept that he’s gone. I think about it and get teary-eyed, but I try to stay strong. Still, no matter how strong you are, a breakdown is inevitable. All his colleagues, his spot boy, everyone is so sad. They keep coming to me saying, ‘Saab ki yaad aa rahi hai, main saab ko chai deta tha’ (We miss him, I used to give him tea). You can imagine how much we are missing him.”
Hema Malini On Family Feud
There were longstanding rumours about tensions and family feud within Dharmendra’s family, suggesting disagreements between Hema Malini and her daughters Esha and Ahana with Dharmendra’s other family—his wife Prakash Kaur, sons Sunny and Bobby, and daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta. Recently, Esha and Ahana’s appearance supporting Sunny at a screening of Border 2 helped dispel these speculations.
Hema clarified, “Papa hai na, papa ke liye sab karenge—whether it’s Esha, Ahana, or Sunny and Bobby—they all loved Dharamji. There’s no negativity in the family. When Dharamji was here, where was the negativity? He was a source of love, strength, and values that he passed on to us all. I was invited too but couldn’t attend. They really wanted me to come and watch the movie. We don’t broadcast all these moments publicly, and why should we? It’s all private within our family. People should understand that instead of spreading rumours. We are all coping and will miss him dearly.”
Rest in Peace, Dharmendra
Dharmendra’s final film, Ikkis, provides a heartfelt tribute to the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, this biographical war drama starring Agastya Nanda is set to premiere on Christmas, December 25, 2025.
Dharmendra’s recent appearance in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani in 2023, alongside Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan, was widely appreciated. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He also featured in Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
