Just days after it was reported that Ranveer Singh is likely stepping away from the muh-awaited project, fresh reports suggest Hrithik Roshan is being considered to take on the iconic role — though discussions are at an early stage. Talking about the casting coup, a source told Filmfare, “Following Ranveer’s exit, Hrithik has emerged as a strong contender for the role. While discussions are still at a very early stage, it will be interesting to see whether Hrithik ultimately comes on board.” Interestingly, Hrithik also had a cameo in Don 2 when Shah Rukh Khan’s character disguised himself as HR in an important scene from the movie.

As per the same report, the makers are mindful that the actor chosen for Don 3 must be well-established with a strong portfolio, as whoever leads the third instalment will be stepping into the iconic shoes of Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. SRK and Bachchan have both immortalised the character with their performances in earlier films of the same name.

Hrithik Was Farhan’s First Choice For Don (2006)

Interestingly, during a conversation last year, Farhan Akhtar told Raj Shamani that he was initially keen on offering Don (2006) to Hrithik Roshan, before finally casting Shah Rukh Khan in it. He was quoted saying, “Hrithik and I did Lakshya, and we had an incredible, wonderful time working together. So I reached out to Hrithik and said, ‘I’m thinking I’m going to remake Don.’ He said, ‘Sounds amazing, dude!’ I said, ‘Let me write it and I’ll bring it to you.’ So he said, ‘Cool.’”

However, Farhan added that SRK’s face popped into his head when he began writing the film. He said, “But I’d already given my word to Hrithik. So I called up Hrithik and told him, ‘I’m writing the film I spoke to you about. But the more I’m writing, I’m feeling I should reach out to Shah Rukh for this film. I’ll never forget, he said, ‘Farhan, you’ve to make your film, and in the best way possible. If you think he’s the guy, please go ahead and call him. Don’t worry about me.’ That is a very gracious thing.”

Soon after Dhurandhar took over the box office – both domestically and overseas, reports surfaced of Ranveer Singh quitting Farhan Akhtar’s much-anticipated action thriller Don 3. However, a report in India Today claimed that his exit was a result of differences with the makers over demands. There has been no official confirmation regarding this issue yet.
