Jimmy Shergill’s Father Satyajit Shergill Dies At 90

From a young age, Shergill was drawn to painting and sculpture. He found early inspiration in his famous aunt Amrita Sher-Gil, one of India’s most celebrated modern artists. Although her work influenced him deeply in his early years, he eventually developed his own unique style of abstract art.

Shergill was also an avid reader, often diving into books about legendary artists like Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Modigliani, Gauguin, and Henry Moore. His love for learning helped him grow continuously as an artist.

Born into a large Sikh joint family in Deokahia village, Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, Shergill grew up surrounded by farmland and tradition. Although he didn’t formally study art at Colvin Taluqdars’ College in Lucknow, he spent much of his time sketching village life and nature around him. These early experiences shaped his artistic vision.

Shergill began showcasing his work in local exhibitions such as those by the Lions Club, eventually earning the Lalit Kala Academy State Award for his contributions. He later moved to Mumbai to follow his artistic dreams and soon became part of the city’s vibrant art scene. Satyajit Shergill will be remembered not only for his artistic talent but also for his dedication and lifelong passion for art.
