kajol rani filmistaan studios AICWA

Mumbai’s iconic Filmistan Studio, once a cornerstone of Hindi cinema’s golden era, has now fallen prey to the city’s relentless real estate ambitions. Founded in 1943 by industry stalwarts Sasadhar Mukherjee (grandfather of Kajol and Rani Mukerji), Ashok Kumar, Rai Bahadur Chunilal, and Gyan Mukherjee, the studio flourished on a sprawling plot in Goregaon West with significant financial backing from the Nizam of Hyderabad, cementing its legacy in film history.

AICWA Urges Maharashtra CM To Stop Filmistan Studios Redevelopment

Covering nearly four acres, Filmistan boasted seven spacious shooting floors, outdoor sets, and permanent installations like gardens and temples. It was the birthplace of classics such as Shaheed, Jagriti, Anarkali, Paying Guest, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, and even modern hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Ra.One. The studio also played a pivotal role in shaping industry icons like filmmaker Nasir Hussain. Yet, that legendary chapter is now drawing to a close. Arkade Developers confirmed on July 3, 2025, that they had acquired the property for Rs 183 crore.

The upcoming development plans include transforming the site into a luxurious residential enclave featuring two towering 50-story skyscrapers. The project aims to offer opulent apartments with 3, 4, and 5 bedrooms, along with lavish penthouses. The entire development is valued at an estimated Rs 3,000 crore, with an expected launch in 2026.

This sale has ignited widespread concern among film industry insiders. The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) strongly condemned the decision, issuing a plea to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis: “This is about lakhs of film workers’ livelihoods and India’s cinematic heritage,” the association warned, urging immediate government intervention to prevent the redevelopment.

For many, the closure of Filmistan signifies more than just the loss of land—it marks the end of an era in cultural history. Its demolition not only erases physical space but also displaces countless memories and legacies cultivated over generations. As Mumbai’s skyline evolves, yet another chapter of Bollywood’s rich history quietly fades into the past.
