A sessions court in Mumbai has refused to stop legal proceedings against Pooja Bedi and seven others, who are accused of revealing the identity of a woman who had filed a rape case against actor Karan Oberoi in 2019. The issue came to light after a press conference was held shortly after Oberoi’s arrest, allegedly at Pooja Bedi’s home, where the woman’s identity was reportedly revealed.

The court said there is enough initial evidence to continue the case and that the charges cannot be dropped at this early stage. The accused include actress Anveshi Jain, actor Sudhanshu Pandey, lawyer Dinesh Tiwari, and others. They are being charged under Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code, which makes it illegal to reveal the identity of a rape survivor.
The woman had complained that during the 2019 press conference, her name and other personal details were made public. A police report confirmed that the press event was held on May 5, 2019, and that video clips from it were widely shared online.
The accused later challenged the court’s decision, saying they did not intend to cause harm or reveal her identity. However, the woman strongly opposed their claims and said the incident led to harassment, with people even finding her address and contacting her.
The court ruled that all involved could be held responsible, even if only one person mentioned her name, because they acted with a common purpose. The court added that claims about not having criminal intent can be discussed during the trial, but for now, the legal process must go on.
The case now moves forward and will be examined in detail in court, where both sides will have the chance to present their full arguments.
