kriti sanon gender bias bollywood

Kriti Sanon has spoken out against gender bias in Bollywood, highlighting that male actors often receive better cars and rooms. As UNFPA ambassador, she is advocating for equal treatment for women. Kriti shared her thoughts at the launch event, where she was named UNFPA India’s Honorary Ambassador of Gender Equality, and opened up about the influences that shaped her, the inequalities she witnessed growing up, and the subtle biases she still encounters in the industry.

Kriti Sanon Calls Out Bollywood’s Gender Bias Referring To Actor Getting Better Cars, Rooms

In an interview with NDTV, Kriti credited her parents for raising her and her sister in an environment free from gender-based restrictions. She explained, “My parents were working professionals who shared responsibilities at home, ensuring that we never felt confined by traditional expectations.”

However, she revealed that her mother’s childhood was very different. “My mom grew up in a time when boys were allowed a lot of things that girls were not. Girls were supposed to stay at home, cook, and follow rules. She wanted to learn swimming or dancing, but couldn’t. The only thing she fought for was studying, and she became a professor.”

Kriti said this struggle laid the foundation for a very different childhood for her and her sister. “Her first thought for me was, ‘Do whatever you want to. Whatever you dream of, go for it.’ That came from her.”

Subtle Inequalities In Bollywood

While her own childhood was free of bias, Kriti acknowledged that Bollywood exposed her to everyday gender inequalities. She admitted she hasn’t faced anything extreme but emphasised that there is still a long way to go. “It hasn’t happened too many times, but little things like the male actor getting a better car or a better room… It’s not about the car, but about not making me feel smaller because I’m a woman. Just make it equal.”

She also pointed out how ingrained behaviours often go unnoticed. “Sometimes even ADs have a habit of calling the female actor first and waiting for the male actor later. I’ve had to tell them not to do that. The mindset needs to change.”

Speaking at the event, Kriti Sanon expressed her commitment to her new role, saying, “I am deeply honoured to join UNFPA India as their Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality. This role provides an incredible platform to advocate for the rights and choices of women and girls, ensuring they have the freedom to make their own decisions, pursue their dreams, and live free from violence and discrimination. I am deeply passionate about empowering every woman and girl, helping amplify their voices, tell their stories, and inspire collective action towards a more equal and just society. I look forward to working closely with UNFPA India to make a tangible difference in their lives.”

For Kriti, gender equality isn’t about grand gestures but about everyday fairness—things that should start at home, in classrooms, on sets, and in workplaces.

Kriti’s Projects

While embracing her role as a global ambassador, Kriti’s acting career is thriving with exciting projects. Reports suggest she has been finalised as the female lead opposite Ranveer Singh in Don 3, a pairing fans are eagerly awaiting. Kriti will also star in Aanand L Rai’s romantic drama Tere Ishk Mein, opposite Dhanush. Slated for a November 2025 release, the teaser has already captivated audiences with glimpses of their chemistry.
