The Indian advertising world lost one of its brightest creative minds on Friday as Piyush Pandey passed away at the age of 70. Known as the “Voice of Indian Advertising,” Pandey was the genius behind some of the most iconic and memorable ad campaigns for brands like Fevicol, Cadbury, and Asian Paints. According to reports, he had been suffering from an infection. His last rites will be performed on Saturday.
Piyush Pandey Dies At 70
Piyush Pandey’s contribution to Indian advertising spanned nearly four decades. He served as the Chief Creative Officer Worldwide and Executive Chairman India of Ogilvy, one of the world’s leading advertising agencies. Pandey began his journey with Ogilvy in 1982, writing his first advertisement for Sunlight Detergent.
Six years later, he joined the company’s creative department and went on to create unforgettable campaigns for brands such as Fevicol, Luna Moped, Fortune Oil, and Cadbury, among many others.
Under his visionary leadership, Ogilvy India was ranked the number one agency for 12 consecutive years in Agency Reckoner, a survey by The Economic Times. His creative brilliance earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2016.
Apart from advertising, Pandey also explored other creative avenues. He appeared in the 2013 film Madras Cafe, starring John Abraham. He also contributed as the lyricist for the iconic patriotic song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, which celebrated India’s unity in diversity. In addition, he co-wrote the screenplay for the film Bhopal Express.
Tributes have poured in from across the business, political, and creative worlds, with many Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Anand Mahindra, and many other leaders and personalities have taken to social media to mourn the loss of an iconic personality who gave a defining face to the Indian advertising industry. He was remembed not only for his exceptional talent but also for his warmth, wit, and ability to tell stories that connected deeply with every Indian.
