manisha koirala on nepal protests

Actor Manisha Koirala has condemned the violent crackdown in Nepal protests, describing it as a “black day” for the nation. Her remarks follow the deadly unrest led by Generation Z demonstrators protesting corruption and a controversial government ban on social media platforms. The protests turned violent in Kathmandu after security forces opened fire on protesters, resulting in 20 deaths and over 250 injuries.

Manisha Koirala Takes A Stand On The Ongoing Nepal Protests

Sharing a powerful image of a blood-stained shoe on her social media, Koirala posted a message in Nepali which, when translated, said: “Today is a black day for Nepal. When bullets respond to the voice of the people, outrage against corruption and demand for justice.”

Manisha Remembers Her Grandfather

Just a few hours later, the actor posted a picture of her grandfather, remembering him and his words about democracy. She wrote, “Remembering B.P. BA on his birthday—Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister and a writer who gave voice to love, conflict, and resilience. As students rise today against corruption and for freedom, his words feel timeless: ‘Democracy is indivisible; if you want democracy at home, you cannot afford to neglect all struggles for it.’ – BP Koirala.” The protests that were already getting more chaotic and dangerous finally went over the edge when the students discovered that the government had banned 26 important social media sites.

About The Nepal Protests

The protests erupted near the Nepalese Parliament in Kathmandu on Monday, with at least 20 people killed and over 250 injured after security personnel opened fire on demonstrators. The unrest was initially sparked by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s decision to ban 26 social media platforms. It was a move widely viewed as an attempt to suppress dissent amid rising corruption allegations.

The situation intensified as thousands of young protesters, mainly from Generation Z, stormed the Parliament complex. Law enforcement responded with batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets, leading to violent clashes. As tensions spread nationwide, the army was deployed in several cities to restore order.

Curfews were imposed in Kathmandu and other major urban centres, including Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Butwal, Pokhara, Itahari, and Damak. Amid mounting political pressure and public outrage, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, taking moral responsibility for the violence.
