Milap Zaveri Opens Up On How John Abraham Revived His Career

Filmmaker Milap Zaveri opened up about the pivotal role John Abraham played in revitalizing his career during a challenging period. Reflecting on their collaborations, Zaveri credited Abraham for helping him regain his footing when several of his films underperformed. Speaking to Variety India, the filmmaker said, “I love John Abraham. I always say he’s my Hulk.” He further added, “For me, he is someone who resurrected my career at one point when I had given quite a few flops.” The duo previously collaborated on Satyameva Jayate and its sequel, both action-driven films designed for mass appeal.

Zaveri also discussed the resurgence of mass cinema in Bollywood, noting its enduring connection with audiences. With that note, he remarked, “Mass cinema has always been the most consumed cinema in this country,” citing classics like Sholay and Mughal-E-Azam, as well as modern hits such as Jawan, Pathaan, and Gadar 2.

He pointed out that while urban love stories targeting NRI audiences dominated for a time, large-scale commercial entertainers never lost their appeal. He said, “The South industry never stopped making those kinds of films,” emphasizing that Bollywood is returning to a proven formula that resonates widely.

The Satyameva Jayate director also stressed that the essence of mass cinema lies in the theatre experience. Underlining the unique energy of collective viewing, he said, “I feel that the experience of watching a film in a theatre where the audience is clapping, whistling, and cheering is indescribable. I don’t think anything else can replicate or replace that feeling.” The filmmaker further argued that mass entertainers deserve the same respect as other cinematic forms, challenging the notion that they are less artistic.

Milap Zaveri’s Next Projects

Currently, Zaveri is working on his next untitled project, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Akanksha Sharma, produced by T-Series. While details remain under wraps, Zaveri continues to focus on larger-than-life storytelling that thrives on theatrical moments and audience engagement. A reunion with John Abraham remains a possibility if the right script comes along.
