Mumbai Police Add Cheating Charges Against Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra In Rs 60 Cr Fraud Case- Deets Inside

Troubles continue to mount for Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra as they face new charges in a Rs 60-crore fraud case. This adds to the ongoing criminal breach of trust investigation by Mumbai police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW). This development comes just a day after the couple denied all allegations, calling them baseless.

More Trouble For Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra In Rs 60 Cr Fraud Case?

According to officials, the couple are currently under investigation in the fraud case. They have now been formally charged with cheating in addition to criminal breach of trust. The EOW has invoked Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code against them, alongside the earlier charges under Section 406 (criminal breach of trust). The case was originally filed under Section 406 before the enactment of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 1, 2024, which now governs such cases. If convicted under Section 420, the couple could face up to seven years in prison along with a fine.

Details Of The Fraud Case

The case was initiated based on a complaint by 60-year-old businessman Deepak Kothari from Juhu, Mumbai. He alleges that he was duped of Rs 60.4 crore through a loan and investment deal related to the now-defunct company Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd. Both Shetty and Kundra served as directors. The Mumbai EOW has already recorded statements from both Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty as part of the investigation.

The couple’s legal representatives have dismissed the allegations, asserting that the matter is purely civil in nature and has already been settled by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in Mumbai in October 2024.

Other Controversies

In addition to these charges, Shilpa Shetty was recently in the news after an FIR was filed against her Bengaluru-based restaurant, Bastian. The restaurant allegedly violated operating regulations. Following these reports, both Shetty and Kundra denied the claims, asserting that the allegations are baseless.
