In an industry often driven by appearances and societal expectations, veteran actor Neena Gupta has openly shared the honest conversations she had with her daughter, designer and actor Masaba Gupta, as she guided her through the realities of Hindi cinema and creative pursuits. Gupta explained that she chose to be straightforward with her daughter about the industry’s strict standards at that time.
Neena Gupta Reveals She Discouraged Daughter Masaba From Acting
In a recent interview with ANI, Neena Gupta recalled an early moment when Masaba was contemplating a career in acting. When asked whether she supported or influenced Masaba’s eventual shift to fashion, Gupta clarified that it was never a deliberate plan. “It was not her decision. It just happened. Circumstances were like that,” she said, adding that Masaba initially wasn’t keen on acting but was considering it because those around her were doing so.
“I told her, look, your face is like this, your body is like that. You won’t get the heroine role in a Hindi film because you don’t fit that mold. It’s a fact. You don’t look like the typical heroine of that era,” she explained. Gupta also encouraged Masaba to consider character roles and pursue formal training if she wanted to pursue acting seriously.
Despite her pragmatic advice, Gupta admitted she was deeply moved by her daughter’s acting talent. “I cried when I saw her perform. She’s such a good actor. She’s very natural,” she said, acknowledging her daughter’s innate ability. Reflecting on their Netflix series Masaba Masaba, Gupta described the experience as unexpectedly smooth. “It was real, so real. She was playing Masaba, I was playing her mother,” she shared.
Although initially concerned about Masaba’s lack of acting experience, Gupta was surprised by her confidence on set. “I was shocked. She was like a pro,” she said.
