Rajkumar Hirani has finally addressed the status of the 3 Idiots sequel and the third instalment in his popular Munna Bhai franchise. Known for his beloved Bollywood blockbusters, the filmmaker revealed that multiple scripts are currently being worked on, offering hope for both projects. After days of speculation about whether the 3 Idiots sequel was moving forward, there seems to be a positive outlook. Although no definitive script has been locked in yet, Hirani confirmed that the ideas are in development, and fans can expect an official announcement soon.
Rajkumar Hirani Opens Up On 3 Idiots Sequel, Munna Bhai 3
Rajkumar Hirani told Variety India, “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both the films. I’ve been developing a Munna Bhai script and also exploring a 3 Idiots sequel concept.”
His last film, Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan, didn’t quite replicate the box office magic of his previous hits. And he admitted that he’s still searching for the perfect climax for Munna Bhai 3. “I had an idea for Munna Bhai, which is on a larger scale. But I still haven’t found the right ending,” he said.
Hirani Says 3 Idiots Sequel Came Unexpectedly
The 3 Idiots sequel idea reportedly came unexpectedly. Hirani hinted that progress is more promising for that project, even as the idea emerged suddenly. After Boman Irani’s recent comments about a possible second part, Hirani shared, “For the 3 Idiots sequel, just recently, out of nowhere, an idea sparked up. I have no idea how it’s gone out into the universe. It’s still not fully developed, but we said we’ll work on it. And when the time is right… but somehow, one morning, I saw that the news was out there.”
Both Munna Bhai 3 and 3 Idiots 2 are highly anticipated projects, but Hirani has yet to decide which one he will prioritise. “I have three or four scripts at the moment, and I need to make a quick decision on which direction to take,” he stated.
Rajkumar Hirani’s Projects
Hirani’s storytelling style is renowned for blending humour, social commentary, and relatable, slice-of-life narratives. His 3 Idiots was loosely inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone. It became a blockbuster and a fan favourite, shining a light on the Indian education system. Similarly, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) and Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) centred around a kind-hearted gangster who struggles with his image but aims to do good. Both films achieved critical and commercial success, cementing Hirani’s reputation as a master storyteller.
