Actor Rajpal Yadav made an emotional message, expressing his distress and despair after he surrendered at Tihar Jail. This comes after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for further relief in a long-standing cheque bounce case. Known primarily for his comedic roles, Yadav has been embroiled in legal and financial troubles linked to a loan dispute that dates back over a decade.
Rajpal Yadav Shares Emotional Message After Surrendering In Cheque Bounce Case
The court directed him to surrender after he repeatedly failed to meet court-mandated repayment deadlines in a case involving bounced cheques totalling around Rs 2.5 crore, which had escalated over time as liabilities accumulated. According to a report by News X, Yadav broke down while addressing the court shortly before surrendering. He was quoted as saying, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahi hain. Aur koi upaay nahi dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to face this crisis alone.”
How Did The Battle Begin?
The legal battle originated in 2010 when Yadav borrowed Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film, released in 2012, failed to perform at the box office, leaving him in financial distress. Several cheques issued for repayment were dishonoured, leading to legal action under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In 2018, a magistrate’s court convicted Yadav and his wife, sentencing them to six months’ imprisonment. While he challenged the verdict through appeals, the case dragged on for years, during which the outstanding amount grew to nearly Rs 9 crore due to interest and penalties.
Delhi HC Granted Multiple Opportunities To Settle Dues
The Delhi High Court had granted him multiple opportunities to settle the dues. In June 2024, his sentence was temporarily suspended. The court urged him to take “exemplary steps” to resolve the matter. Although Yadav deposited Rs 75 lakh in 2025, most of the debt remained unpaid. The court noted repeated breaches of undertakings to pay.
Rajpal Yadav Surrenders
On 4 February 2026, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed Yadav’s final plea for a one-week extension to arrange funds. She emphasised that leniency could not be granted indefinitely, regardless of his celebrity status. The court pointed out nearly 20 previous assurances that had gone unfulfilled and underscored that court orders must be respected.
Despite a last-minute attempt by his counsel on 5 February to propose a new payment plan, the court refused to recall the surrender order. Yadav subsequently surrendered at Tihar Jail around 4 pm to serve his six-month sentence. The funds deposited with the court have been released to the complainant company.
