Ranveer Singh Apologises To Rishab Shetty For Mocking Kantara Chapter 1's Daiva Scene

After facing criticism for imitating a Daiva scene at IFFI 2025, Ranveer Singh has issued an apology and addressed the controversy. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had previously filed a formal complaint against Singh. They accused him of disrespecting the sacred “Daiva” scene from Kantara: Chapter 1 during the event’s closing ceremony in Goa. The complaint, lodged with the Panaji police, alleged that Singh referred to the deity, known as “Chavundi” or Daiva, as a “female ghost” and then imitated the character on stage. The HJS described this act as “derogatory” and claimed it hurt religious sentiments. They called for an action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

In his apology, Ranveer clarified that his intent was solely to praise actor Rishab Shetty and the film Kantara. He emphasised that his actions were not meant to offend religious feelings and expressed regret if his gestures caused any hurt. The actor’s statement aimed to clarify his intentions amid the backlash and reaffirm his respect for religious sentiments.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) filed a formal complaint with the police on Monday, accusing actor Ranveer Singh of insulting Goddess Chamundadevi during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The complaint states that Singh mimicked the divine form of a deity from the Kannada film Kantara: Chapter 1 and referred to Chamundi Daiva, a revered figure among the Kotitulu community, as a “female ghost.”

Representatives Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye submitted a memorandum to the Panaji police station. They requested the registration of an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly offending Hindu religious sentiments. They emphasised that Chamundi Daiva is a sacred family deity of the Tulu community. Any derogatory depiction or mention of the deity is considered disrespectful. Such actions, they warned, could provoke public outrage and disturb social harmony.

The HJS called for a thorough investigation into the matter and urged the organisers of IFFI to establish a code of conduct to prevent the insult or misrepresentation of religious deities at future events. They also demanded that Ranveer Singh issue a public apology and pledge to refrain from such remarks or performances in the future. The organisation encouraged its supporters to protest peacefully and lawfully. Singh was unavailable for comment.

Details Of The Incident

While praising Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara: Chapter 1, Ranveer Singh referred to Chamundi Daiva as a “female ghost” and proceeded to imitate the deity on stage. Recent videos show that Rishab Shetty even warned Singh not to continue with the act. But Singh ignored the warning and persisted, which sparked widespread online criticism.

In addition to this controversy, Singh’s upcoming film Dhurandhar has also faced legal trouble. The parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. They alleged that the film draws unauthorised inspiration from their son’s life without their permission. His brother has also sought an official statement in which the makers clarify whether the film is based on the late Major Mohit Sharma.
