Sameer Wankhede has voiced his frustration over the backlash he’s facing since the release of the show The Ba***ds of Bollywood, which features a character allegedly based on him. Wankhede, a former official of the Narcotics Control Bureau, stated that he has been subjected to mockery and public ridicule, particularly after the show’s debut.
Sameer Wankhede Accuses Ba***ds Of Bollywood Makers Of Defamation
During a hearing related to his defamation lawsuit against Aryan Khan and the streaming platform Netflix, Wankhede questioned the court, asking, “Do I deserve this trial in public opinion?” He claimed that the portrayal of a character resembling him has led to social media mockery and tarnished his reputation.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court resumed proceedings on Wankhede’s legal plea against Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix. Wankhede’s lawyer pointed to a tweet review by self-proclaimed critic Kamaal R. Khan (KRK) to illustrate the threats and mockery Wankhede has faced since the show aired. “The show has convinced people that I lack integrity. A thief, and what else?” the lawyer remarked.
Wankhede Says Red Chillies-Netflix Both Share Liability
The defendants argued that the ongoing investigations by the CBI and ED are unrelated to the show, asserting that Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix are not responsible for these inquiries. Senior Advocate Kaul emphasised that the case concerns Aryan Khan, the show’s creator, rather than the production house or streaming platform.
However, Wankhede’s legal team contended that both Red Chillies and Netflix should share liability. “Red Chillies and Netflix are colluding. They cannot simply claim to be intermediaries; therefore, some responsibility lies with Netflix,” Wankhede’s lawyer asserted.
Red Chillies Defends Citing Creative Satire
Representing Red Chillies, Senior Advocate Kaul defended the show’s satirical nature. He stated, “I am entitled to create satire. The plaintiff is attempting to silence us. I can say that my characters are inspired by real people… Every producer and paparazzo can imitate or depict individuals in their work.”
He further drew parallels to the work of cartoonist RK Laxman, who satirised political figures, including the Prime Minister. “That’s a tradition we’re proud of in our country. RK Laxman’s satire is an example of free expression,” Kaul argued. The court, however, interjected, noting that satire in The Ba***ds of Bollywood appears to lack the same level of objectivity and fairness, especially given Wankhede’s and Aryan Khan’s past.
Aryan Khan was notably arrested by Wankhede in 2021 during a narcotics raid. But he was later cleared of all charges.
About The Ba***ds Of Bollywood
The show portrays a police officer in plain clothes fighting against drug abuse, and many viewers have noted that the character resembles Wankhede. Currently streaming on Netflix, the series has sparked controversy. Wankhede has demanded compensation for defamation and has called for the scenes depicting the character based on him to be removed.
