Supriya Pathak Opens Up On Playing Hansa In Khichdi
When asked about her iconic role of Hansa in Khichdi, Supriya Pathak said, “Actually kya hua tha, bada ajeeb mere saath hua tha. Maine bahut kaam kiya, phir jab Sanah aane wali thi, toh maine socha ki I want to take time off. Toh maine decide kiya ki main kaam nahi karna chahti.”
Sanah interrupted, “It’s my fault.” To this, Pathak said, “No, no, it’s not.” The banter continued as Sanah said, “As always, mothers blame daughters for everything.”
Supriya clarified, “No, I’m not blaming you. You did the right thing. You came into my life, which is a great, good thing.”
The veteran actress continued, “Anyway, toh basically maine ek time liya tha jab main kaam nahi karna chahti thi. Tabhi humne ‘Mohandas B.A. LLB’ shuru kiya. Humne apni ek company shuru ki. Uske baad humne Drishtant karke ek show kiya. Toh hum kaam toh kar rahe the, lekin apni company mein, in-house. Phir jab maine decide kiya ki ab main bahar kaam karne ke baare mein soch sakti hoon, tab mujhe laga ki shayad mujhe bahar kaam karna chahiye.”
Sanah again interrupted and said, “Credit mera hai?” Surpiya replied, “Maine bola tera hai.” To this, Kapur corrected, “Nahi nahi, not at all. Credit poora Atish Sir aur JD Sir ka hai, aur Mom ka hai.”
Talking About Khichdi
Supriya Pathak said, “Toh basically tab mujhe Khichdi offer hui. Bahut time ke baad main kahin bahar kaam karne ja rahi thi, toh main bahut sincerely kuch accha karna chahti thi. Aur JD aur Atish ko main bahut pehle se jaanti thi. Mujhe woh bahut acche lagte the, young boys the woh. Toh jab unhone offer kiya, maine haan keh diya. Us waqt mujhe kuch karne ki bahut bhook thi, kyunki main already ek long time of not working se aa rahi thi. Mujhe lagta hai ki wahin se mere andar ek kick-off hua, aur Khichdi mein unhone ek amazing, brilliant character bana diya.”
She continued, “Matlab ek aisi aurat jo kuch nahi karti hai — aur phir bhi usse hum sabne itna pyaar kiya, including me. It’s amazing. Aur mujhe lagta hai woh ek definition bhi thi ki ek woman kaise ho sakti hai. Ki mujhe nahi karna hai, mujhe tayyar hona hai. Matlab yeh bhi allowed hai ek aurat ko. Ki mujhe kuch nahi karna — kyun mujhe hi ghar chalana hai, yeh bhi karna hai, kaam bhi karna hai? Nahi, woh jaisi bhi ho sakti hai. Aur mujhe lagta hai aap logon ne us character ko itna pyaara bana diya, kyunki woh irritating bhi ho sakti thi. Lekin Hansa itni pyaari hai ki hum sab bas usse dekhna chahte the.”
Sanah Kapur Recalls Khichdi As A Torture
Speaking of how Khichdi impacted her childhood, Sanah recalled, “Khichdi ne actually mujhe bahut torture kiya hai — sach mein. Uske dialogues ne mujhe bachpan mein kaafi torture kiya hai. Kyunki school mein bachche bade ajeeb hote hain. Jab main ab bol rahi hoon toh realise ho raha hai ki school mein bachche kitne ajeeb hote hain. School mein hum TV dekhte hain, par us waqt itna samajh nahi aata tha ki kya real hai aur kya nahi. At least hamari generation ko toh itna samajh nahi aata tha.”
Kapur continued, “Aaj kal shayad bachchon ko sab pata hota hai. Mere school mein mere friends mere liye bad feel karte the ki ‘tumhari mom toh Hansa hai, woh kuch khana nahi banati, kuch nahi karti.’ Aur main bahut irritate ho jaati thi, kyunki meri mom actually itni perfect hai. I mean, genuinely, my mom is perfect. Kabhi-kabhi it’s too much pressure bhi lagta hai ki itna perfect bhi nahi hona chahiye. Mujhe bhi us standard tak jeena padta hai — that’s a lot of pressure.”
Sanah On Mother Supriya Pathak
The Shaandar actress said, “Lekin woh sach mein perfect hain. Unhone sab kiya hai. Subah uthkar mera har dabba Mom ne cook karke bheja hai. Mere saath kabhi aisa nahi hua ki mera dabba na gaya ho. Kabhi-kabhi main bolti thi, ‘Mom, canteen mein khana de do,’ par nahi — everyday ghar ka khana jaata tha. Subah uthkar woh khana banati thi, phir shooting karti thi, phir wapas aake mujhe pick up karti thi, homework karwati thi, projects karwati thi. Jo bhi maine kiya, aapne karwaya. Main karti nahi thi, woh alag problem hai. Toh aise bahut saare dialogues the — jaise ‘Loha kha ke jaana.’ Bahut log Mom se woh dialogue baar-baar bolte the. Par haan, main khud bhi kabhi-kabhi sahi tareeke se bol nahi paati thi, kyunki uspe too much Hansa pressure tha.”
Supriya reveals her favourite dialogue from Khichdi is, “Aur ab toh main bas yeh keh sakti hoon —
‘Main toh thak gayi, bhai saab… main toh thak gayi.'”
