Sanjay Dutt recently shared a haunting memory from his time in jail while discussing his conviction related to the 1993 Mumbai bombings. With his close friend Suniel Shetty, the 66-year-old actor revisited a chapter from his incarceration years. He recounted that when his beard grew long, the jail authorities appointed a fellow inmate—a man convicted of double murder—to shave him, and what happened next left him terrified.
Sanjay Dutt Recalls Double Murderer Holding Razor To His Neck During Jail
During an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show, Sanjay Dutt explained, “The jail superintendent once asked me to shave my long beard and assigned a prisoner named Mishra for the task. Curious, I asked Mishra how long he had been locked up, and he said, ‘Fifteen years.’”
Sanju scene where Sanjay Dutt (playe dby Ranbir Kapoor) had to shave his beard
He continued, “By that time, his razor had reached my neck. I asked him what crime he was in for, and he replied, ‘double murder.’ I immediately held his hand to stop him. So, a double murder convict had a razor in his hand—that’s just an ordinary day in jail.”
A similar scene was also shown in Sanjay Dutt’s bbiopic-Sanju where Ranbir Kapoor was the lead. The scene in the movie was a hilarious one where Sanju managed to run away.
Sanjay’s Period In Jail
Reflecting on his life, Sanjay said he harbours no regrets except for losing his parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, too early. He shared how much he misses them. Sunil Dutt passed away in 2005 at the age of 75 after a heart attack in his sleep at their Bandra home, while Nargis succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1981, just days before Sanjay’s debut in Hindi cinema with Rocky.
What Was Sanjay Convicted Of?
Regarding his legal troubles, Sanjay Dutt was convicted for firearms offences related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, which resulted in 257 deaths and injured 713. Authorities claimed he had purchased weapons from the bombers, but Dutt maintained they were intended for self-defence during the Hindu-Muslim riots of 1993. In May 2013, he was transferred to Yerwada Jail to serve a five-year sentence. Due to his good conduct and initiatives like hosting a radio program for fellow inmates, he was granted a remission of 144 days.
