Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty has approached the Bombay High Court to seek protection of his personal rights. While specific details of his plea remain undisclosed, Bar and Bench reported on Friday that Shetty referenced a viral deepfake image featuring his grandchild in his petition.

Suniel Shetty Approaches Bombay HC For Personal Rights Protection

“Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court requesting safeguards for his personality rights. The actor has highlighted that numerous social media pages and websites use his image to promote their businesses. He also pointed out an instance involving a deepfake picture with his grandchild,” Bar and Bench reported.

Bollywood Celebs Who Seek Protection For Personality Rights

Recently, several celebrities—including Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, and Akkineni Nagarjuna—have also moved courts to protect their personality rights. Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court issued an order to prevent the unauthorised use of veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle’s personality rights. The court barred various entities from misusing her personal attributes, such as her name and images, including through artificial intelligence (AI). It emphasised that creating AI tools to replicate a celebrity’s voice without their consent constitutes a violation of their identity rights.

“Personality rights essentially involve the right to control and safeguard the exploitation of one’s image, name, likeness, or other personal attributes, as well as the potential for commercial gain derived from them. These rights rest on an individual’s autonomy to permit or deny the use of their likeness or attributes,” the Delhi High Court explained while ruling in favour of Aishwarya Rai’s rights.

What Are Personality Rights?

Personality rights are legal protections that allow individuals to control how their identity is used in both commercial and public domains. They cover attributes that are uniquely associated with a person—such as their name, image, likeness, voice, signature, or even trademark catchphrases—and prevent unauthorised exploitation. These rights are generally categorised into two types:

  • Right of Publicity: Protects against unauthorised commercial use of personal attributes, like featuring a celebrity’s image in advertisements.
  • Right to Privacy: Guards against intrusion into personal dignity, including misuse through deepfakes, morphed images, fabricated endorsements, or other doctored content.
