Veteran singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit, remembered for her melodious voice and graceful on-screen presence, passed away on Thursday, November 6, at the age of 71. She had been unwell for a long time and breathed her last at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai.

Her brother and music composer Lalit Pandit confirmed the sad news, revealing that she suffered a cardiac arrest around 8 pm. Her funeral will be held on Friday, November 7, at 12 noon.
Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana belonged to a highly respected musical family. She was the niece of the legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj and the sister of the famous music composer duo Jatin-Lalit. She began singing at just nine years old and made her playback debut in 1967.
Sulakshana rose to fame with her hit song Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara from Sankalp (1975), which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Her duet Saat Samandar Paar Se with Lata Mangeshkar from Taqdeer (1967) also remains a timeless classic.
Alongside her singing career, Sulakshana made her mark as an actress in the 1970s and 1980s. She debuted opposite Sanjeev Kumar in Uljhan (1975) and went on to star in popular films like Sankoch, Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar. She worked with stars like Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, and Shashi Kapoor, earning praise for her emotional depth and charm.
On the personal front, Sulakshana’s love for Sanjeev Kumar was well-known. She reportedly wished to marry him, but he did not reciprocate her feelings. Heartbroken, she never married and gradually withdrew from the limelight after his death in 1985, leaving behind a legacy of grace, talent, and unfulfilled love.
