Vir Das To Direct A Horror Film After Happy Patel

Vir Das, the International Emmy-winning comedian, has opened up about his upcoming directorial project, which he began writing following the controversy surrounding his ‘Two Indias’ monologue. The new film, his second directorial venture, is scheduled to go into production later this year. Known primarily for his humour, Vir Das has a knack for surprising audiences—horror, apparently, is not the first film genre that comes to mind when thinking of him.

Vir Das To Direct A Horror Film After Happy Patel

After starting 2026 with his debut directorial, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a spy comedy, Das revealed his plans for his next film. “I hope to make a pure horror movie next; it will be completely different from comedy,” he shared with Mid-Day. The comedian actor revealed if he would also act in the film, as he did in his first. To this he replied, “I hope so.”

This untitled project has been in Das’s mind for a few years. He first put pen to paper in 2021, inspired by the controversy sparked by his monologue, Two Indias. That performance was a sharp critique of the contradictions between India’s progressive ideals and its regressive realities. This offended certain sections of the population and led to widespread outrage. As Das faced a career low point, he turned to what he does best—writing.

Vir On The Origin Of Horror Film

Reflecting on the origin of the horror film, Das said, “After that controversy, no one wanted to work with me for two years. We had a live tour, and 192 brands backed out. I had signed three acting projects, but they all fell through. So I sat around for two years. But the silver lining was that it gave me time to write my comedy special, Landing, which went on to win an Emmy. It also allowed me to develop the next three projects I plan to make.”

Though the controversy is behind him, Das has found his own way to handle the trolling and criticism. “Some days, I believe it’s a trade-off—that it’s the price you pay for the love and attention you get from a global audience. You have to be willing to accept that ‘tax,’” he said.
