Popular Assam singer Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains commenced their final journey home in Kahilipara from Guwahati airport on Sunday morning, September 21, 2025, as thousands of mourners gathered on the streets to pay their last respects to their beloved artist.

The procession moved slowly through a sea of humanity, with emotions running high. People from all walks of life and age groups lined the streets, showering flowers on the ambulance carrying the iconic singer’s mortal remains. The 25-km journey from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to his Kahilipara residence was expected to take several hours amid this emotional scene.

Singer’s Wife Pays Floral Tribute

Upon landing from Delhi, the flight’s cargo was first taken out from the luggage section and placed near the runway. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, paid floral tributes and laid an Assamese ‘gamosa’ on the coffin. Overcome with emotion, Ms. Garima broke down on seeing the casket, embracing it in her grief.

Later, the coffin was transferred into a flower-decorated ambulance. Ms. Garima accompanied the body in the ambulance, which exited the airport through the VIP route. The casket, draped in a ‘gamosa’ and adorned with marigolds and jasmine, was carried alongside the convoy. Senior state officials also arrived to receive the body.

Fans Breakdown

As the convoy made its way through the crowd outside the airport, thousands of fans could be heard singing his songs and shouting, “Jai Zubeen da!” . Wailing mourners held up cut-outs of the singer and traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’ embroidered with the words ‘Z G (Zubeen Garg) Forever’. His beloved open jeep, often used for travel to his performances, was part of the procession, with a large portrait of him displayed at the front. His team of musicians was present in the vehicle as well.

Fans also lifted their mobile phones high, capturing the singer’s last journey home. People from across Assam had traveled to Guwahati to pay homage to the artist. He mesmerized audiences for over three decades with more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages and dialects.

Details regarding his last rites are yet to be finalized. The Assam Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Sunday evening to decide on the cremation arrangements.
