- Fun Trivia:Every film that she played a lead role in, (except those starring Ashok Kumar), between 1947 and 1955, Kamini Kaushal's name appeared before the hero's name.
Born as Uma Kashyap in Lahore, Kamini Kaushal completed her BA honours in English literature in the city. Chetan Anand offered her a role in the film ‘Neecha Nagar’ (1946), that was her debut. She married her brother-in-law in 1948 when her sister dies in a car accident, leaving behind 2 daughters. Offers didn’t stop coming her way, and she got to work with all the top actors of that time, viz, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and others. Interestingly, Kamini was the first female lead for whom Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice for ‘Ziddi’. Another feather to her cap was the popular puppet show on Doordarshan that she made between 1972 and 1973. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for ‘Biraj Bahu’ in 1956, and recently Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award in 2013 and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
