Mahjabeen Bano, more commonly known as Meena Kumari, was a successful Indian film actress who was born to a Muslim father, Ali Bux, and a Hindu mother, Iqbal Begum. She wanted to study in school but was forced to act in Hindi movies as a child artiste, as she was the sole bread earner of the family. Mahjabeen was renamed Baby Meena and her first film as a child was “Farzand-e-Watan” or “Leatherface” (1939), which was directed by Vijay Bhatt for Prakash Studios. Her early adult work includes mythological films like “Veer Ghatotkach” (1949) and fantasies like “Alladin and “The Wonderful Lamp” (1952). She got married to Kamal Amrohi in 1952 but they got divorced in 1964. Three weeks after the release of her film Pakeezah, Meena died of cirrhosis of the liver and it is believed that there was no money to pay her hospital bills.
