Nirupa Roy is often referred to as the ‘greatest mother’ of Bollywood. In a career that spanned over fifty years, she has acted in over 250 films. Born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara in Gujarat, she taught children Gujarati before she ventured into films. ‘Amar Raj’ in 1946 was her first Hindi film. Though she started off being a leading lady, she shifted to playing on-screen mother in 70s, and continued to do so. In ‘Deaawar’ (1975), she played Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor’s mother, and the dialogues are yet a part of filmy conversations! In between, during 40s and 50s, she’d be seen playing mythological characters which were equally popular. She was a part of Bimal Roy’ legendary film ‘Do Bigha Zamin’.
