Suneel Darshan On Abhishek Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor’s Broken Engagement

When asked about the failed engagement of Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor, Suneel Drashan said, “That was very unfortunate, kyunki jab maine Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya film plan ki, toh aisa socha tha ki kitna bada project hoga yeh, Amitabh Bachchan ka beta, Raj Kapoor ki poti, Karisma Kapoor. Aur inke beech ek relationship tha jo shaadi tak pahunchne laga tha. Toh maine socha, ek film toh in dono ko saath mein karni hi chahiye. Aur us film mein jo teesra character tha, jo ek bohot bada hero tha, woh bhi karna chahte the. Unhone mujhe approach kiya tha, naam nahi loonga.”

He added, “Lekin maine unhe cast isliye nahi kiya, kyunki jo mera har ghar ka hero tha, main usse kaise chhod sakta tha? Agar chhodta, toh uske career ko nuksaan ho sakta tha. Toh wahi actor cast kiya. Hamare liye loyalty comes first. Isi basis par woh film cast ki gayi thi-Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor. Aur mera chhota bhai, Dharmesh Darshan, jisne Dhadkan aur Raja Hindustani banayi thi, usse director liya tha. Nadeem-Shravan aur Sameer, jo hamari music team thi har gaana khoobsurat tha, aur aaj bhi woh sab yaadgaar hai.”

The director concluded, “Some things are not destined to happen. Jo hua, woh thoda sad tha, but it was great. It was great knowing all these people.”

About Karisma-Abhishek’s Engagement

Bachchan and Kapoor were once one of Bollywood’s most talked-about couples, with their engagement marking a high point in their relationship. The couple officially announced their engagement during Amitabh Bachchan’s grand 60th birthday celebration in 2002. However, the relationship came to an abrupt end just a few months later, in January 2003, when the engagement was called off without any official explanation from either family.

The sudden breakup led to widespread speculation and numerous media reports. Rumours suggested that the split may have been influenced by a mix of personal and professional concerns — including family pressure, career uncertainties, and financial disagreements. Some reports indicated that Karisma’s mother, Babita, was worried about Abhishek’s then-uncertain career path and had reportedly insisted on a prenuptial agreement, which the Bachchan family allegedly did not agree to. Others pointed to possible differences in expectations between the two families regarding finances and long-term plans.
