AR Rahman Reveals Khwaja Mere Khwaja Was A Song He Made For Himself

When asked if there is any composition he made for himself but had to give it away, AR Rahman said, “I think of Khwaja Mere Khwaja. I originally made it for myself. Then Ashutosh came and said, ‘I need a song. I need two lines on Khwaja Sahab because Akbar goes to Ajmer.’ I was like, ‘What? How do you even know I made this?’ He asked, ‘What song did you make?’ I said, ‘I made a song—but you can’t change anything.’ That’s how he heard it. He said, ‘Please give it to me.’ And yeah, that’s how it ended up in the film. It was something I had made for myself.”
