Sonam Nair Responds To Forced Comedy Scenes In Dupahiya
Speaking of some audience’s reaction to forced comedy in Dupahiya, director Sonam Nair said, “So basically, it’s a satire and it’s not a normal comedy. So when you have a satire, the satire has to be a little more absurd than real life. That’s what makes it a satire. So it’s a type of comedy, where you’re trying to make a point by showing the absurdity of this character. So from the beginning, the first scene is only that the girl chooses the younger boy in front of the older one. The younger boy lives in Bombay, and she also wants to go to Bombay. That is absurd. If you actually think about it, it’s not going to happen, right? So, getting the tone to this is that the village people don’t behave in a very normal way”
Adding further, she said, “We are pushing the boundary and saying the villagers are a little atrangi. They are not your, they’re not behaving in the normal. It’s not like you’re going to, feel when you’re watching; this is not a life of life, it’s satire. So in that, you have to push the boundaries and make it a little absurd. So when the point lands, it’s also landing the characters. It’s not like the character is aware of the subject that they are handling. They are on another planet. And when they go through the journey, they come to the end, which is what hits them.”
Concluding, the director said, “So this is a type of writing handle and the type of set-up. If you see, there are other works like, Malamaal these days or Laapaataa Ladies. They have that element of absurd as a quality. So some people, I think, then they are approaching it like, what’s your normal thing of life? And it’s a satire of comedy. So, those talks have been very far in between, you know, compared to the positive feedback. We cannot expect everyone to have the same tone or taste, we need to change the tone otherwise everything will look like each other only.”
