Iqbal Khan Reveals OTT Platforms Became ‘Steroid Boost’ Just Like Films, TV Post COVID
Talking about the rise of OTT and how it has transformed viewing habits, Iqbal Khan credited the pandemic as a major turning point. He said, “OTT ko ek steroid boost mila, COVID ki wajah se. Uski wajah se OTT, OTT ban gaya jo aaj hai. Shayad agar COVID nahi hota to itna bada nahi hota OTT, kyunki log majboor ho gaye the, cinema ja hi nahi paaye. Cinema kya bahar hi nahi nikal paaye. Aur jab unko OTT pe achha content milna shuru ho gaya, to phir woh uske used to ho gaye.”
He also pointed out how OTT has expanded opportunities for actors, adding another strong medium to the industry. Iqbal said, “Haan, of course ek aur medium badh gaya. Pehle sirf TV aur films hote the, woh theatre hota tha. Ab ek OTT bhi ho gaya.”
Addressing the changing viewing patterns and the rise of short-form, quick content, Iqbal offered a balanced take. He said, “Agar aap usko ek rozi-roti ke nazariye se dekhen, to bahut badhiya cheez hai.” He added a more critical perspective, “Lekin mujhe iske peeche ka ganit achha nahi lagta, kyunki ab log bolte hain audience aisi ho gayi hai, audience waisi ho gayi hai. Agar aap thode se bhi creative ho, to yeh cheez aapko thoda disturb karti hai.”
In conclusion, Iqbal Khan sees OTT as a powerful and evolving space that has reshaped both storytelling and opportunities in the industry. While he acknowledges its growth and accessibility, he also remains mindful of how changing audience habits can influence creativity. For him, the key lies in striking a balance between innovation and meaningful storytelling as the digital space continues to expand.
