Karanvir Sharma On Working In TV VS Films
When asked if there is any difference working in TV and films, Karanvir Sharma said, “Sabse pehle jo aap baat kar rahe hai ki if you have to work hard, uska main jawab deta hoon. I think we have to work hard to get the part. You have to work harder to represent that character for your director, your writers, and the audience to be accepted. Not that I do it for acceptance; I do it for the sheer pleasure of wanting to be another character, or something that can be derived from me.”
Continuing, he added, “Then you have to work really hard to promote, jisme ek poori team rehti hai. And you know, you have to see to it ki it reaches the correct audience. Aur uske baad aapko ek self-analysis karna padta hai. You have to work hard on yourself — you have to stay fit, stay confident, stay active. You have to learn new things as an actor, always observe your environment, your feature films that you watch, your series that you watch, even like real-life podcasts that you see. Bahut saari cheezon se aapko inspiration mil sakti hai.”
Karanvir On His Character Development
The Trail Season 2 actor said, “Agar main apne character ki baat karun jo Param Munjal in Trial Season 2 hai, toh usme bhi I was stuck with one part. Mujhe ek differentiation hi samajh aa raha tha because kya tha, I was doing a show also, and I was shooting for this as well. I was culminating with that show and getting into this character. Toh mere liye aisa tha ki I don’t want it to be similar. Similar traits aa hi jaate hain because ek mannerism set ho jaata hai. And TV is a long format — toh usme kya hai ki aap roz karenge toh aap waise hi ban jaayenge. Aur thoda sa woh linear format mein chalta hai, yeh non-linear mein chalta hai. Matlab iska ending aap pehle shoot karenge for XYZ reasons.”
Continuing, he said, “Toh kya hota hai, you lose track of wanting to be different. And you can’t try too hard to be different, because woh fake lagega. Because I don’t believe in those fake hamming performances. Sirf hota hi nahi hai woh — chahe woh television ho, ad films ho, ya kuch bhi ho. So I had to be authentic to this character. And, the good part is that pehle maine socha tha ki yeh adapted character hai. It was an adapted character from The Good Wife Season 2. Uska ek character tha, which is my character — who comes in as a boss, one of the directors of the company, sabko appraisal deta hai, game change karta hai, bahut saari cheezein karta hai.”
Karanvir Shares How An Actor Is Built
He added, “So you have to work hard for everything. Yahaan pe thoda easy mere liye tha because it was a new character adapted to the Indian audience. Toh Delhi ka munda, Punjabi. Punjabi toh waise bhi hoon, aur logon ko waise bhi lagta hai main Delhi se hoon. Waise main Mumbai se hoon. Kyunki mera jo bolchal hai woh Mumbai ka nahi hai for some reason. Uspe maine work kiya hai. Work on that — you have to work hard on your dialect, your delivery. Aur sabse khoobsurat baat yeh hai ki that hard work never stops.”
Karanvir On Audience Demand
Karanvir continued, “Toh ek toh yeh jawab. Aur doosri baat yeh, jaise audience, new age people, they come in and ask me all the time: ‘Woh transition kaisa raha aapka?’ Not many people realise this ki meri shuruaat 2012 mein hui thi, jab maine sabse bada TV show kiya tha. Jo, I think abhi Kahiin Toh Hai Amazon pe hai ya kahin hai. Siyasat karke usme Urdu seekhni thi. Toh meri shuruaat series se hui thi. Meri pehli jo journey rahi thi woh feature film se thi.”
The actor added, “I did a film called — ek bahut niche film thi — which blew out of proportion with the internet, jab internet blew out of proportion. It was called Saada Adda. So ek toh logon ko yeh nahi pata hota hai ki meri shuruaat actually feature films se hui thi. Aur agar pehli parvarish ki baat karein, so my dad has been a veteran in this industry for more than 40 years now. And iss industry mein 40–50 saal tikna is a big deal. He is from FTII, NSD, and he worked with the biggest of stars — Naseer saab ke saath bhi kaam kiya hai.”
Karanvir Sharma On Nepotism And Being A Nepokid
Speaking of nepotism, the actor said, “And I keep on saying this only because kahin na kahin interviews mein koi mujhse yeh sawal poochna bandh kar de: I am not a ‘nepo kid,’ because my dad was an outsider. He is still an outsider. So I am an outsider, and I will always be an outsider. Main inclusive hoon apne sector mein — of directors and producers jo hum jaise logon ko opportunity dena chahte hain, who want ke ‘boss, he is a bank for the buck, performance kar sakta hai, mere character pe khara utar sakta hai.’ That’s why people like me come in.”
Concluding, he said, “So for me, it’s been a struggle. Not ki main film se hoon, TV se hoon. TV has — jo pyaar TV ne diya hai na mujhe, shayad hi feature films se mujhe woh mila ho. Jo audience ka lagav hai, jo understanding hai. Aur television mein apne aap ko establish karna. And I have never done one of those saas-bahu shows. I have always done layered characters. That’s one of the reasons people take me, and I feel blessed. Toh jo bhi kaam aapko aata hai, jo aapka ghar chalata hai, jo aap karna chahte ho — I should be happy with that.”
Karanvir Sharma was seen in Kajol’s The Trial Season 2 recently.
