Mukesh Chhabra is one of India’s well-known casting directors, and his upcoming projects are Ramayana, Dhurandhar and others. He was also a part of The Traitors hosted by Karan Johar. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Mukesh Chhabra opened up on casting fees for films and how they are different. The casting director also reflected on the risks one takes for making a film.
Mukesh Chhabra On Casting Fees For Films
When asked about the casting fees for, say, a film which has a budget of Rs 1 crore, Mukesh Chhabra said, “Badi film, chhoti farak toh padta hi hai. Theek hai, agar main Ramayan karoonga, King karoonga, ya Dhurandhar karoonga, obviously woh badi film hai. Jinka process Dangal ho ya Laal Singh Chaddha ho — jo badi films hain, toh of course uska price alag hota hai.”
He added, “Kuch chhoti filmein hoti hain jinka economics chhota hota hai, par agar aapko karna hai, toh aap kar sakte ho. Toh main actually sab films karta hoon jo mujhe sahi lagti hain, kyunki agar main sirf badi filmein karoonga, toh yeh jo chhoti filmein hain, unko bhi toh chahiye na koi accha actor. I think agar aap 1 crore ki film kar rahe ho, toh matlab maan ke chalo ki usmein Rs 8–10 lakh aapke hote hain as casting fee.”
Mukesh On Risk Factors Involved In Filmmaking
Talking about the risk factor involved in this process, Mukesh said, “Yaar, woh toh aapko risk lena padta hai, right? Abhi Brahmastra toh waise bhi 7 saal chali hai. Ramayan bhi 3–4 saal se chal rahi hai. King bhi 1–2 saal se ho raha hai. Dhurandhar bhi 1–2 saal chali hai. Woh toh aapka risk hota hai na, business risk hota hai. Aapko pehle signing amount milega, phir middle of the casting milega, phir thoda mid-casting milega, phir after the casting milega. Yeh toh aisa rehta hi hai, 10%, 20%, 30%, yeh toh aise divide hota hi hai na.”
Mukesh’s Upcoming Projects
The casting director has some interesting lineups. It includes Ramayana, King, Dhurandhar and others. His recent projects were Maalik, Son Of Sardar 2, Dhadak 2 and Tanvi: The Great.
