R Madhavan Opens Up On Age Gap In Bollywood

When asked what it is like doing a romantic movie even with an age gap with co-star, R Madhavan said, “It’s not often that an actor gets known for a romantic role over so many years. I remember, even before I joined the industry, seeing Rishi Kapoor sir’s interview. He was in his early 40s and doing a film with Juhi ji. I think it was called Bol Radha Bol or something. And he said, ‘I’m already 40 and I’m working with heroines who are almost 18–20 years younger than me.'”

He added, “And I thought, wow, that’s an achievement to be that age and still doing romantic roles. And now I’m 55, and I have the privilege of working with someone like her. I’m very thankful that I’m still getting to do romantic films. And when it’s age-appropriate, what happens is you don’t have to camouflage a lot or act differently. I don’t have to put a spring in my step to sound like a young person, which I’m not. I mean, if you look at the body movements, they are of a 50-year-old, maybe not 55. But I’m still 45 in terms of how it all feels.”

Concluding, he said, “So when all that is not a factor to worry about, and just being yourself is still romantic for the story. And is perceived that way, it’s a huge blessing, yaar. So I’m very happy with that. And like you said, I’ve never heard this line before—but ‘Maddification of romance,’ you know? I hope it continues with age-appropriate romance.”
