Saiyami Kher On Nepotism Debate In Bollywood
When asked about the whole nepotism debate in Bollywood and if it is tough for an outsider to survive here, Saiyami Kher said, “I mean, this has been discussed so much, and I think opinions differ from person to person. But again, I feel that we only talk about the film industry. Because it’s such a glamour-driven industry, it’s always in your face. The same friend I was talking about—she’s an engineer working in her father’s factory. I’m saying that it becomes a natural thing: ‘My father built this whole empire.’ She became an engineer, got in on merit, did everything on her own, and has worked very hard for it. She’s currently working in that factory because she has to take the company to the next level. I feel like a doctor’s son doesn’t have to be a doctor.”
She further added, “But if he’s good at it, then by all means, he can be a doctor. We talk so much about the film industry, there are a lot of advantages when you come from a film family, particularly in terms of being able to open doors. For instance, when you want to meet a producer or director, if you don’t have access, you might spend three years just trying to find an opportunity, saying, ‘Let me go to a screening,’ or ‘Maybe he’ll meet me.’ You could spend years doing that. Whereas someone from the industry can just pick up the phone and say, ‘Hi, my son/daughter wants to meet you,’ and the meeting is set up the next day. So yes, in terms of access, there’s 100% an advantage. But finally, if you’re good, you’re good. If you’re not, the audience is going to decide that.”
Saiyami Shares How The Audience’s Decision Is Ultimate
The JAAT Actress said, “You can’t do much about it—you have to be good at what you do because the audience is very critical. There’s also added pressure when you come from a film family, because people already have expectations: ‘Oh, he’s so-and-so’s son,’ or ‘She’s so-and-so’s daughter—of course she’ll be amazing.’ Then you have to live up to those expectations, which is another tough challenge. So yes, it has its advantages and disadvantages. But in the end, in the film industry, the audience decides.”
