Laxmi, survived the acid attack in 2005 when she was only a 15-year-old. She was attcaked by a 32-year-old man while going for her music class.
The stalker scarred her face and other body parts but this incident didn't bog her down. After going through many surgeries, she stood back with courage and determination.
She put the victim behind the bars and got 27,000 signatures on a petition to ban sale of acid and filed a PIL seeking a new law or amendment. In 2013, Supreme Court gave the decision in favour of Laxmi and also created some restrictions on the sale of acid.
Laxmi and her partner Alok Dixit, a social activist founded an NGO – Channv Foundation. They broke all the stereotypes by not getting married and remained in a live-in relatioship. They have a daughter named Pihu.
In 2014, Laxmi was one of the winners of the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award and the award was presented by then first lady of US Michelle Obama.
