Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has filed a lawsuit against attorney Tony Buzbee, David Fortney, and their client, referred to as Jane Doe, alleging malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and civil conspiracy. This legal action comes on the heels of the dismissal of a sexual assault lawsuit that was filed against him.
Jay-Z Files Lawsuit On Attorney And Former Accuser
According to court documents from Alabama, reported by People magazine, the lawsuit was initiated on Monday. In his filing, Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, has brought forth three claims against the defendants: malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and civil conspiracy. Additionally, he has included a defamation claim specifically against Jane Doe. The rapper is seeking assumed, actual, and punitive damages in this case.
Jay-Z asserts that the original allegations of rape were intentionally “false” and “malicious.” He argues that the lawsuit was “strategically and tactically calculated and timed to inflict maximum pain and suffering” on him. The initial lawsuit, submitted in October 2024, accused Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty in 2000. However, Buzbee and co-counsel Antigone Curis voluntarily withdrew the case on February 1.
What Does The New Lawsuit Claim?
In his new lawsuit, Jay-Z claims that the October allegations were based on misinformation provided by Jane Doe and her legal team. He contends that Jane Doe and her attorneys attempted to “extort” him through a threatening “private demand letter,” alleging that the defendants were engaged in “a desperate attempt to leverage Mr. Carter into an extortionate payoff.”
The legal documents also reveal that Jane Doe “voluntarily admitted” to a representative of Jay-Z that “Carter did not assault her,” and that Buzbee had “urged her to proceed with the false narrative of the assault by Mr. Carter to maximize financial gain.” The filing concludes with Jay-Z seeking to hold Jane Doe accountable for her willful defamation and her malicious prosecution of knowingly false allegations against him.
