In a recent interview, Lady Gaga opened up about the personal battles that kept her away from the music industry, shedding light on her mental health journey following a diagnosis of psychosis. The pop icon candidly discussed the mental health issues that led her to step back from the spotlight.
Lady Gaga Recalls Her Experience With Psychosis Diagnosis
The conversation, featured on The Interview podcast by The New York Times, offered fans a glimpse into her struggles and her much-anticipated return to music with her new album, Mayhem. Reflecting on her experience, Gaga shared, “(Five years ago), I had psychosis. I was not deeply in touch with reality for a while. It took me out of life in a big way, and after a lot of years of hard work, I got myself back.”
Lady Gaga Recalls Partner Michael Polansky’s support
During this challenging chapter, Gaga met her partner, Michael Polansky, who has since become an integral part of her life. She recounted how they connected at a pivotal moment in her recovery, saying, “It was a hard time, and it was actually really special when I met my partner, because when I met Michael, I was in a much better place, but I remember him saying to me, pretty early on, ‘I know you could be a lot happier than you are. It was really hard for me to hear him say that because I didn’t want him to think that of me. I wanted him to think I was like this happy, totally together person.”
Gaga acknowledged the complexities of discussing her mental health, expressing discomfort with being defined by her struggles. “It’s something that I have found increasingly harder to talk about. I hate feeling defined by it. It felt like something I felt ashamed of. But I don’t think that we should feel ashamed if we go through times like that. I mostly just wish to say, it can get better. It did for me, and I’m grateful for that,” she added.
Now, Gaga is in a much more positive place, and she credited Polansky with enhancing her life. “From the moment that I met Michael, he had the most warm and kind disposition of maybe anyone that I had met in my whole life”, she said.
With her new album, Mayhem, Gaga is making her long-awaited return to music. Describing the project as a reflection of her fears and journey of self-discovery, she explained that Mayhem started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved. This 14-track album marks a resurgence of her darker pop roots, showcasing her growth as an artist and individual.
