The Life Of A Showgirl Album REVIEW: Taylor Swift

Our beloved tortured poet has returned, and I’m sat with earphones in. Hit play on Fate of Ophelia, pass through it, hit next, thinking, “Hmm, this is different, but when do I get hit with the Taylor Swift tsunami of I’m-struck-by-love fever?” Well, it came, guys, it did come, when I played Ruin The Friendship. She is the queen of pop, with a crown shining so bright you would blind yourself willingly. Because who are we kidding? Everyone’s a Swifty, even the ones babbling, “Oh, her music is for baby girls!”

But… but yes, there is a “but.” Looks like our girl may have taken a dip for a few songs before getting you back on track.

The Life of a Showgirl feels like the child of Look What You Made Me Do, but written with an “I-found-my-man-and-you-all-can-go-to-hell” heart. No, I won’t spoil you with the easter eggs in the album, but boy, are there so many of them!

This is Taylor’s 12th studio album, and she has brought back the magic of 1989 and Reputation by skipping longtime producer Jack Antonoff’s line and holding hands once again with Max Martin and Shellback. Yes, we love this combination more than ever, which is why you will love this album too.

Fate of Ophelia is bound to be a crowd favourite, but it is Actually Romantic that will blow you away. No, it’s not about her fairytale romance with Travis (which we did want). Instead, Taylor claps back at her nemesis in the most Swift way possible.

Taylor even penned down her plans with fiancé Travis Kelce in Wishlist. I mean, the lyrics:

“Have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you / We tell the world to leave us the F— alone and they do / Got me dreaming ’bout a driveway with a basketball hoop.”

Yes, Taylor, we do too.

But the one raising my eyebrows, and the one I jammed to the hardest, is Cancelled! You’ll be addicted to it, you’ll see (or hear). But was Tay Tay talking about the whole scandal of her best friend Blake Lively, with Justin Baldoni? I mean, think about it:

“Good thing I like my friends cancelled, I like them dripped in Gucci and in scandal / At least you know exactly who your friends are — we’re the ones with matching scars.”

It’s a working theory. Let’s give it time.

Other than Queen Taylor, another diva ruling the charts right now is Sabrina Carpenter, who is without a doubt Hollywood’s new hit machine. So I guess it was a no-brainer to have the two of them together. I mean, queens do stick together and share crowns, contrary to popular opinion. Man oh man, did they put on a show with the title track! It’s definitely the headliner of the album.

Personally, I would have you begin the album from Ruin The Friendship. But if you’re a Swifty, you and I both know we’ll be listening to all 12 songs like it’s our very own anthem. So there you go, I’m backing off this keyboard and getting back to my 5th round of the album. You should too.
