Dining With The Kapoors Review

The Kapoors are Bollywood’s first family and their recent 1-hour-long docu-drama on Netflix is proof. It not only introduces us to all of Raj Kapoor’s children, grand children and great grand children – along with a couple of nephews and nieces, but its also has the family – many of whom are well know Bollywood stars, shares fond memories of Raj Kapoor over laughter, lunch and legacy.

The show kickstarts three weeks before Raj Kapoor’s centenary birth with Rima Jain floating the idea of an anniversary lunch to her son Armaan. Armaan – who featured in just 1 Bollywood project to date, promptly executes a celebration befitting the Kapoor reputation with some of their favourite meals made by him and plated with the help of the family’s younger generation. What follows is a spirited family reunion of 5 generations – thought some were MIA, as they share laughter and lunch while keeping the legacy of Raj Kapoor alive. From gently roasting each other to recalling fond memories with each other and their beloved dada/nana/papa, Dining With The Kapoors shows us that this family is just like our when they spend quality time together.

What Works

The work that went into recreating Raj Kapoor home in Chembur – Deonar Cottage and bringing elements of the iconic home that is currently no more is evident. From the swing to the many archived photos and videos, Dining With The Kapoor is full of glimpses that is sure to take you back to the past and make you nostalgic.

From The emotional high point comes when Rima recalls her mother’s plea to sell the house before it becomes a ruin. It lands like a quiet sigh. The tone is warm, indulgent and disarmingly affectionate. Yet occasionally, the naturalness feels a tad too camera-conscious. Certain reactions carry the faint shine of rehearsal, which mildly dulls the documentary spontaneity.

What Doesn’t Work

Minor issues here and there – but nothing to distract you from the overall experience. While we love that all the members of the Kapoor clan are being their real selves, it does seem

Conclusion

Dining with the Kapoors is a beautiful tribute to legacy and love Bollywood’s first family has for its patriarch. It beautifully incorporates nostalgia while still bring a fresh twist – many in the form of their favourite foods getting a contemporary twist with the flavours they grew up with, leaving viewers hoping it would have been a series instead of a 1 hour-long movie.
