Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Review
Shashank Khaitan and Varun Dhawan are back for the third time and have delivered a love-filled, lighthearted rom-com just like their previous collabs Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania & Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Set in Delhi, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari follows the turmoil that enters the lives of Sunny Sanskari (Varun) and Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor) when their partners break up with them out of the blue. Sunny – the only child of a jewellery designer and store owner – is left utterly devastated when the beautiful and cultured Ananya (Sanya Malhotra) turns down his marriage proposal only to reveal that she’s now engaged to the wealthy Vikram Singh (Rohit Saraf).
A depressed Sunny, through his BFF Bantu (Abhinav Sharma), learns that Vikram too recently became single to marry Ananya after breaking off with his childhood sweetheart of 12 years, Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi). Hellbent on winning back the love of his life, Sunny ropes in Tulsi to gatecrash the duo’s over-the-top destination wedding in Rajasthan and break the marriage. However, during the pre-wedding festivities – which we got a glimpse of with the film’s promotional material- Sunny and Tulsi unknowingly start falling for each other. Do Sunny and Tulsi end up together, or do they go back to their exes? How much drama does their pretend create in the lives of all involved?
To know the answers to these questions, one needs to watch Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari in theatres and here’s our honest review of it. PS: It won’t disappoint.
What Works
The film’s lead cast have delivered with their acting and manageRohit Saraf, Sanya Malhotra
What Doesn’t Work
The narrative does become predictable and you are able to even guess some of the dialogues before they are spoken. The second half feels unnecessarily dragged.
Technical Ananlysis
Direction
Shashank Khaitan has delivered. While some scenes do feel repetitive and will remind you (some intentionally and others unintentionally) of previous Dharma movies, Khaitan has managed to capture all he complexities of modern relationships as well as the chemistry between the lead actors.
Screenplay & Dialogues
Written by Shashank and Ishita Moitra, the narrative maintains a steady pace through out, despite a dip in the second half when emotions take the foreground. However, both deserve a round of applause for the cringe but killer one-liners. Yes, they are cringe, but they yet manage to make you chuckle. The writing in the second half, especially post he confrontation scene could have been more refined.
Cinematography
Manush Nandan takes us to the beautiful landscapes of Rajasthan with his cinematography. The lighting, the arial shots are just chef’s kiss.
Music
The film’s peppy music – composed by, written by and sung by several artist, add the typical flavour we expect from it. It doesn’t add much to the narrative but the multiple songs do make the film feel lengthier than it actually is.
Editing
Manan Sagar and Charu Shree Roy did a decent job editing the film, but it could have been much better – especially in the second half.
Star Cast
Every actor delivered what was expected of them – some more than others. While Varun seems to be overdoing it initially as Sunny, he later grows on you. Janhvi Kapoor as Tulsi – the simple, sanskari teacher, amps he hotness meter he moment she sets foot at the wedding location in Rajasthan. Sanya Malhotra delivers a stellar performances, managing to shine even when surrounded by others. Rohit Saraf eats in every scene – be it with his dance moves or emotional eyes.
Maniesh Paul and Abhinav Sharma make you go ROFL everytime they are on screen while Akshay Oberoi delivers in his limied screen time.
Conclusion
Do head to theatres to watch Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari for a family weekend filled with love, drama and tons comedy. The lead actors make you fall in love with their layered characters while tickling you funny bones with one liners. The meta references in SSKTK are sure to make the day of any Bollywood cinephile.
