The Trial: Season 2 Review

Kajol returns as Noyonika Sengupta in The Trial: Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha Season 2, streaming on the newly branded JioCinema (formerly Disney+ Hotstar). The Hindi remake of The Good Wife sees a new showrunner, Umesh Bist, stepping in after Suparn Varma helmed Season 1. Despite the change, the courtroom drama continues to struggle with pacing and originality.

Set three months after the events of Season 1, Noyonika and her disgraced husband, Rajiv (Jisshu Sengupta), pretend to be a happy couple for their children and the media. But cracks in the relationship are obvious, especially after Rajiv keeps his political ambitions hidden from her. Enter Nandini (Sonali Kulkarni), Rajiv’s formidable political rival, who adds much-needed tension to an otherwise sluggish narrative.

Meanwhile, the law firm is facing internal conflict due to a merger, and personal tensions rise as Vishal (Alyy Khan) struggles to move on from Noyonika. New partner Param (Karanvir Sharma) also stirs the pot, but the subplots often feel repetitive and undercooked.

What Works

Kajol once again delivers a powerful performance as Noyonika—sharp, emotionally layered, and confident. Jisshu Sengupta plays the sly Rajiv with finesse, and Sonali Kulkarni is compelling as the ambitious Nandini. The show maintains production design and styling and a polished look with high production values.

What Doesn’t Work

The legal cases lack intrigue and are mostly used as filler. Emotional arcs are stretched thin, and the central plot struggles to maintain momentum. Despite a new showrunner, the series doesn’t offer much innovation. It remains too loyal to the original without adapting meaningfully to its Indian context.

Technical Analysis

Direction of Umesh Bist is competent but not bold. The cinematography and background score do their job without standing out. The editing could be tighter many scenes feel overly drawn out.

Star Performances

Kajol as Noyonika Sengupta carries the show with ease, adding depth to an otherwise predictable script.

Jisshu Sengupta as Rajiv Sengupta, who is also Noyonika’s husband, is charismatic and manipulative, the perfect fit for his role.

Sonali Kulkarni as Nandini is a strong addition, giving the show a needed jolt of energy.

The supporting cast, Alyy Khan and Karanvir Sharma, deliver solid but forgettable performances due to weak character arcs.

Conclusion

The Trial Season 2 tries to blend legal drama with personal conflict, but ends up being a middling watch. The performances are top-notch, but the storytelling lacks the firepower to make it binge-worthy. Despite its glossy exterior and star cast, the show needs stronger writing and tighter plotting to truly make a mark.
