Dharmendra Sholay Hema Malini

Released on August 15, 1975, Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan (then Bhaduri) is all set to celebrate 50 years this Friday. As fans gear up to celebrate 5 decades of this cult classic – that’s known as much for it dialogues as it is for its music, story and acting, we bring you some interesting trivia about the film. Scroll below to know what it is.

Dharmendra Bribed Sholay’s Spot Boys To Hug Hema Malini?

Sholay is known for many things, including giving us two much-loved Bollywood couples – Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bachchan – who tied the knot in 1973) and Dharmendra & Hema Malini – who wed in 1980. The trivia we bring you today, is that Dharmendra spent nearly Rs 2000 in the 70s to hug Malini more than was originally anticipated while shooting Sholay. So how did it do that?

Well as per old media reports, the actor – who was then (and still is) married to Prakash Kaur, found a rather cheeky way to spend more time with her. For this, the veteran actor began paying the film’s spot boys bribes to cause ‘accidental’ delays. As a reports, while shooting the sequence where Veeru was teaching Basanti how to use a revolver, Dharmendra allegedly paid the spot Rs 20 each time to drop a reflector or disrupt the trolley so he could hug her again.

We have to say, Dharmendra ji found his wingmen in the most unexpected place. From dropping a reflector, stalling the trolley, or causing minor delays, the spot dadas did it all just so that Dharmendra could hug Hema once more during another take. It’s said the actor spent nearly Rs 2,000 on these interruptions, all to win over his lady love. Not creeped by the gesture, reports states Hema was charmed by the gesture and as we know, the duo went on to marry a couple of years later.

Dharmendra-Hema Malini Relationship

Dharmendra and Hema Malini relationship is one of the most-talked about and complicated love stories in Bollywood. At that time, the now-89-year-old was already married to Prakash Kaur and a father to their four children – , Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta and Ajeeta. With Kaur reportedly unwilling to grant him a divorce, reports claim the ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ co-stars converted to Islam in 1980 in order to tie the knot.

Dharmendra reportedly changed his name to Dilawar Khan, while Hema became Aisha Bi and had a private Nikah ceremony, followed by a traditional Iyengar wedding to honour Hema’s roots. The duo are parents to Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
