Anushka Sharma shares Victoria Azarenka's letter

‘Sultan’ is raging at the Box office, smashing records after records. A first in a long time, this Salman Khan venture has a good script that has been applauded by critics and masses alike, and a female character which is equally strong. Yes, we are talking about the character of Aarfa here, played to perfection by actress Anushka Sharma.

However, there have been some who are not entirely happy with the portrayal of the female protagonist in the movie. According to them, the concept that Aarfa left her dream as she was pregnant, was a very sexist move, and they slammed Anushka for being a part of it. Anushka, who was till now silent on the matter, has now come out with a reply.

The actress recently shared a letter that was written by Belarusian professional tennis player Victoria Azarenka, explaining why Aarfa chose motherhood over her Olympic gold medal.

“Wanted to share this. For those who couldn’t understand Aarfa’s decision in ‘Sultan’, maybe this will put things in perspective,” Anushka tweeted on Saturday.

In the letter, Azarenka said that she could not be a part of Wimbledon because of a knee injury. Around the same time, she and her boyfriend learnt that she was pregnant, and the child was expected by the end of that year.

“We couldn’t be happier and feel very blessed to begin this exciting journey of building a family together,” she wrote.

“I have been truly inspired by so many strong female athletes who return to the very top of their sport after having children,” Azarenka added.

“And I plan to do exactly that.”

Anushka then wrote: “Choosing motherhood over career is empowering. Choosing your career over motherhood is empowering. The freedom to choose is empowering.”
